Keeping Christ at the Centre of Our Lives

Keeping Jesus at the Centre: Guarding Against Spiritual Drift

In our walk of faith, maintaining a close relationship with Jesus is paramount. The story of Jesus at the temple in Luke 2:41-52 serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of keeping Him at the centre of our lives. Even amidst religious activities, it is all too easy to experience spiritual drift, where we may find ourselves distant from the very One we profess to follow.

Religious Activity vs. Relationship

It is crucial to understand that engaging in religious practices does not automatically equate to a vibrant relationship with Jesus. We may attend services, participate in church programmes, and even serve in various ministries, yet still miss the essence of true communion with Him. The familiarity of our routines can lead to complacency, as we assume that Jesus is present simply because we are involved in spiritual activities. However, it is vital to remember that proximity does not guarantee intimacy.

The Danger of Assumptions

As believers, we must avoid the trap of assuming that Jesus is with us just because we regularly attend church or have had previous encounters with Him. Our spiritual walk is not static; it requires continuous awareness and intentionality. Jesus desires a living, breathing relationship with us, one that necessitates our active engagement. We should ask ourselves: Are we truly seeking His presence, or are we merely going through the motions?

Recognising Spiritual Drift

Spiritual drift can occur subtly. It is possible to become distanced from Jesus while still maintaining outward appearances of faithfulness. Small compromises in our daily lives or distractions from our spiritual disciplines can gradually lead us away from His embrace. What begins as a minor deviation can ultimately result in a significant separation from our Saviour.

In Luke 2, Mary and Joseph, despite their devotion, lost track of Jesus for three days. Their journey back to Him serves as a reminder that we too can lose sight of Jesus even in the midst of our religious activities. When we realise that He is missing from our lives, it is essential to pause, reflect, and actively seek Him rather than continuing along our own paths without Him.

Acknowledging Our Drift

One of the first steps in addressing spiritual distance is recognising that Jesus may not be where we expect Him to be. Instead of questioning His presence, we must examine our own hearts and acknowledge the ways we have drifted. This requires a willingness to look inward and assess our spiritual condition honestly. Regular self-examination is vital; it allows us to identify areas where we may have strayed from our relationship with Christ.

Retracing Our Steps

When we become aware of our disconnection from Jesus, we should take the time to retrace our steps. Just as Mary and Joseph journeyed back to the temple, we too can reflect on our recent choices and identify where we may have gone astray. Have we prioritised other commitments over our time with Him? Have we allowed distractions to take precedence in our lives? By recognising these patterns, we can make intentional changes to return to our first love.

The Good News

The wonderful truth we must hold on to is that no matter how far we may feel we have drifted, Jesus is always willing to be found. He welcomes us back into relationship with open arms, ready to restore what has been lost. It is never too late to return to Him. His grace is sufficient, and His love is unwavering.

Practical Applications

To ensure that we keep Jesus at the centre of our lives, consider the following practical steps:

  1. Regularly Assess Your Spiritual Life: Take time to evaluate whether you are prioritising your relationship with Jesus or merely engaging in religious activities.
  2. Be Proactive: Do not wait until you feel distant to seek closeness with Jesus. Engage with Him daily through prayer, scripture, and reflection.
  3. Reflect on Daily Practices: Examine your daily routines and priorities to ensure they align with your faith and relationship with Jesus.
  4. Seek Support: Engage in conversations and prayer with fellow believers. Community can be a powerful catalyst for rekindling your faith and drawing closer to Christ.
  5. Embrace His Welcome: Remember that it is never too late to return to Jesus. He stands ready to embrace you with love and grace, no matter how far you may have wandered.

In conclusion, let us remain vigilant in our spiritual journey, ensuring that Jesus occupies the central place in our hearts and lives. By doing so, we can guard against the dangers of spiritual drift and cultivate a deep, abiding relationship with our Lord.
