Finding Peace in Life’s Storms

4 October 2026

God: The Eye of Our Lives

In the ever-changing landscape of our lives, we often encounter a whirlwind of chaos and discomfort. Personal experiences may lead us through unexpected changes, some of which may even be positive yet still unsettling. In these moments, we are reminded that God serves as the eye of our lives, providing peace and guidance amid the storms we face.

Embracing Discomfort as a Path to Growth

Change is a constant in life, and discomfort often accompanies it. I recall a time when a significant shift in my career left me feeling unmoored and uncertain. While the change opened doors I had long prayed for, the initial feelings of discomfort were overwhelming. It is in such moments that we must learn to embrace the unease as a sign of growth and transformation. Proverbs 16:9 tells us, “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” This scripture reassures us that our discomfort does not go unnoticed; instead, it can be a divine invitation to seek God more fervently.

God as Our Place of Peace

Consider the metaphor of the eye of a hurricane. In the midst of a storm, the eye remains calm and serene, providing refuge from the chaos surrounding it. Similarly, God is our refuge, a source of stability in tumultuous times. When we find ourselves overwhelmed by the storms of life, we can turn to Him. The Song of Songs 2:10 beautifully illustrates this: “My beloved speaks and says to me: ‘Arise, my love, my beautiful one, and come away.’” God calls us to step away from the chaos and into His presence, where we can experience true peace.

Biblical Examples of Seeking God

Throughout scripture, we find compelling examples of individuals who sought God’s presence during their times of uncertainty. Moses provides a profound illustration. In Exodus 19, he ascends Mount Sinai, seeking God’s guidance amidst the confusion of leading a nation. It is here that he encounters God in a powerful way, receiving the commandments that would shape the lives of the Israelites.

Similarly, Elijah, in 1 Kings 19, finds himself fleeing from despair and uncertainty. It is in the quiet, gentle whisper of God that he recognises divine guidance. Both Moses and Elijah demonstrate that seeking God is essential during times of turmoil. Their encounters with God remind us that He is always present, waiting for us to turn to Him.

Jesus’ Example of Quiet Time

In the life of Jesus, we see a perfect example of prioritising solitude and prayer. Mark 1:35 tells us, “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.” Similarly, in Luke 6:12, we read how Jesus spent the entire night in prayer before choosing His disciples. His commitment to seeking the Father in quiet moments highlights the importance of intentionality in our relationship with God.

As we navigate our busy lives, we too must carve out time for God. Matthew 14:23 records how Jesus withdrew to a mountain to pray, demonstrating that even in the midst of His ministry, He prioritised time alone with God. This practice serves as a model for us; in our moments of solitude, we can anchor ourselves in God’s presence, allowing Him to calm our storms.

Practical Applications for Our Lives

  1. Embrace Discomfort: Acknowledge discomfort as a catalyst for growth. When faced with unsettling changes, invite God into those moments. Consider journaling your experiences and reflecting on how God is working through them.
  2. Seek God’s Presence: Make a conscious effort to spend time in God’s presence. This could be through prayer, reading scripture, or simply being still in a quiet space. Create a daily routine that prioritises this time, recognising its importance for spiritual nourishment.
  3. Recognise God’s Guidance: Be attentive to God’s instructions and plans for your life. Trust that He is interested in the details and will provide for your needs. Engage with your church community, as they can often be vessels of God’s guidance.
  4. Respond to God’s Call: Take practical steps to create quiet moments with God. Set aside time each day to pray and listen for His voice. Consider establishing a prayer or meditation space in your home, allowing it to be a sanctuary where you can connect with God.

In conclusion, as we navigate the complexities of life, let us remember that God is the eye of our lives. In Him, we find peace and guidance amid chaos. Embrace the discomfort, seek His presence, recognise His guidance and respond to His call, allowing God to be your stabilising force. In doing so, we cultivate a life of discipleship that draws us closer to the heart of God.
