In the Gospel of Luke, we read that “as the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem” (Luke 9:51). This moment marks the beginning of a journey filled with intention and determination. Jesus knew that His path would lead to the cross, where He would fulfil the ultimate purpose of His coming. His journey was not accidental; rather, it was a deliberate movement towards the culmination of His mission.
Jesus’s resolve is a model for us as we navigate our own journeys of faith. Just as He set His sights on Jerusalem, we are called to focus on the path laid out for us as we follow Him. Each step we take can be infused with purpose, reflecting the love and grace we have received through Christ.
The Defeat of Sin and Death
The Apostle John writes, “The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work” (1 John 3:8). This statement encapsulates the essence of Jesus’s mission. Through His death and resurrection, He triumphs over sin and death, breaking the chains that hold humanity captive. In Colossians 2:13-15, we find reassurance in the truth that Christ’s sacrifice has disarmed the powers and authorities, making a public spectacle of them.
Furthermore Hebrews 2:14-15 Jesus shared in our humanity, and that through His death he rendered powerless the one who holds the power of death—namely, the devil. This proclamation of victory is a powerful reminder that the battle has been won, and we are invited into this triumph.
When we consider the significance of Jesus’s resurrection, we are reminded of the eternal life He offers to all who believe. Death no longer has the final say; it has been defeated.
The Church’s Foundational Confession
“You are the Christ, God’s Messiah, the Son of the Living God” The church is built upon the identity of Christ, the cornerstone of our faith. Jesus declares in Matthew 16:18, “And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail (not withstand it)”
As members of this body, the church, we are called to participate actively in the mission of sharing the gospel. Our love and service to others are vital expressions of our faith. We are not merely passive recipients of grace; we are commissioned to demonstrate that grace to the world around us.
Our Personal Resolve & Reason
Are we actively sharing the message of salvation, embodying love and service in our interactions with others?
Cultivating a personal resolve to follow Christ means engaging with His mission wholeheartedly. It requires us to seek out ways we can serve and love those in our communities, whether through acts of kindness, sharing our testimonies, or simply being present with those in need.
As we continue to grow in our understanding of Jesus’s purpose, let us commit to living out our faith with intention, sharing the hope and salvation we have in Him. Let us be a church that embraces its mission, leading others to the transformative love of Christ through the proclamation of the Gospel & His Lordship over all.
