Luke 19:28-48
A Palm Sunday reflection on Jesus the returning King.
The Humble King
Jesus’ choice to ride into Jerusalem on a donkey is laden with meaning. It starkly contrasts the worldly expectations of power and authority. In Zechariah 9:9-10, we encounter a prophetic declaration of the coming king: “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, daughter of Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey.” Here, we see that Jesus embodies humility, coming not as a conquering ruler on a grand steed but as a servant king a suffering Messiah.
As Jesus enters the city, the crowds proclaim Him with joyous shouts, recognising Him as the promised Messiah. Yet, while they celebrate His arrival, their understanding of His mission is still clouded by their expectations of a political saviour. We must pause to reflect on our own expectations of Jesus. Are we open to understanding Him as He truly is, or do we impose our own ideas of power and authority upon Him?
The Promise of His Return
The prophetic significance of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem is twofold. While it marks His first coming, it also points us towards His future return as described in Zechariah 12:10, 14:1-9 & Psalm 24. This psalm boldly proclaims, “Lift up your heads, O you gates; be lifted up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in.” Here lies an invitation for us to prepare our hearts and lives for His return. Jesus’ humble entry is a precursor to His glorious return, a reminder that every knee will bow and every tongue will confess Him as Lord.
As disciples, we are called to remain faithful and prepared for His return. The parable of the ten minas illustrates this call to active engagement in our faith. We are entrusted with gifts and responsibilities, and it is our duty to invest them wisely in anticipation of His return. This means living out our faith in tangible ways, serving others, and sharing the hope of Christ with a world that desperately needs it.
Conclusion
The triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem is a rich tapestry woven with themes of humility, promise, and preparation. As we celebrate this event, let us not only remember His first coming but also look forward to His glorious return. May we commit ourselves to recognising His lordship in our lives and actively preparing our hearts for the day when He shall come again. In doing so, we embrace our calling as His disciples, living out our faith with purpose and passion until the King of glory returns.
