As For Me & My House

The Covenant Between God and His People

To understand the weight of Joshua’s statement, we must first appreciate the historical context of the covenant established between God and His people. The covenant was not merely a set of rules but a relational promise that God made with Israel, beginning with Abraham and continuing through generations. This relationship was characterised by God’s unwavering faithfulness, even when His people faltered.

The Necessity of Choice

Joshua challenges the Israelites to make a choice: “Choose this day whom you will serve.” This call is as relevant today as it was thousands of years ago. In a world filled with distractions and competing influences, the decision to serve the Lord must be intentional. It is not always the easiest path, especially when societal norms contradict biblical values.

As individuals and families, we are called to stand firm in our commitment to God, regardless of external pressures. This involves daily choices that reflect our faith, such as prioritising prayer, studying Scripture, and engaging in worship together.

Remembering God’s Faithfulness

The history of Israel serves as a testament to God’s faithfulness throughout generations. From the promises made to Abraham, through the deliverance from Egypt, to the victories in the Promised Land, God consistently demonstrated His unwavering love and commitment. As you reflect on your own life, consider the ways God has been faithful to you and your family.

Sharing testimonies of God’s goodness can strengthen your household’s faith. It reminds each member that they are part of a larger story—a narrative that is rich with God’s promises. As we recount these moments, we inspire confidence in the Lord’s ability to fulfil His word in our lives.

Renewing Our Commitment

Joshua’s challenge to the Israelites is also a call to renewal. Just as they were asked to reaffirm their commitment, we too are invited to examine our dedication to God. Renewal is not a one-time event; it is an ongoing process that requires intentionality and reflection.
This week take time in prayer, seeking the Holy Spirit’s guidance to deepen your relationship with God. As you declare, “As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord,” remember and be strengthened by the significance of the loving & faithful covenant you have with the Lord.
